Course Description:

The course will cover the aetiology, epidemiology and impact of hypermobility spectrum disorders. The diagnostic criteria along with a range of validated assessment tools and the evidence for management will be presented. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice the assessments and develop clinical reasoned management plans.

 

Who is the course for?

Physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, podiatrists and occupational therapists who wish to gain knowledge and advance their clinical practice in assessing and managing children and adults with hypermobility related conditions.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants should:

  1. Have an understanding of the spectrum of impact of hypermobility related problems and common comorbidities in children and adults
  2. Be able to apply advanced practical and clinical reasoning skills in the assessment and management for individuals with hypermobility related problems in the context of the evolving evidence base and multidisciplinary practice
  3. Justify and apply client centred strategies and techniques to facilitate management of pain and fatigue and to motivate and facilitate behaviour change in patients with hypermobility related disorders
  4. Select suitable outcome measures aligned to the International Classification of Functioning Framework

Professor Jane Simmonds MCSP MACP SFHEA
PD, MA, PGDip (Man Ther), PGCHE, BASc, BPE

Professor Simmonds combines her academic roles as Director of Education and Lead for the MSc Advanced Physiotherapy at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health with clinical work, as a Consultant Physiotherapist in the London Hypermobility Specialist Network - Central Health Physiotherapy. Within her clinical role she specialises in working with children and families with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) and Ehlers Danlos Syndromes (hEDS). Professor Simmonds has authored more than 100 research and clinical education publications including peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. She has delivered more than 100 national and international invited lectures and keynote presentations, webinars, and courses. Professor Simmonds is Chair of the Ehlers Danlos Society International Consortium Allied Health Working group, a member of the EDS Society Medical and Scientific Board and a medical advisor to the HMSA, EDS Support UK and PoTS UK.
